Piles, or haemorrhoids, are common in India, caused by swollen veins in the rectum or anus, leading to pain, bleeding, itching, and discomfort. While mild cases respond to medication and lifestyle changes, advanced piles may require surgery. Laser piles surgery has become a popular, minimally invasive option with faster recovery, says Dr Amita Jain, an experienced senior general and laparoscopic pile surgeon in Delhi.
What Is Laser Piles Surgery?
Laser piles surgery is a modern medical procedure used to treat haemorrhoids with the help of laser technology. In this technique, a doctor uses a focused laser beam to shrink the swollen hemorrhoidal tissue. The laser energy seals the blood vessels supplying the piles, which reduces blood flow and causes the piles to shrink gradually.
Unlike conventional surgery, laser treatment does not require large cuts or stitches. Because of its precision, the surrounding tissues are not significantly affected, which reduces pain and bleeding after the procedure.
The surgery is usually performed under local or spinal anaesthesia and typically takes around 20–30 minutes. In most cases, it is done as a day-care procedure, meaning patients can go home the same day.
Some of the main advantages of laser piles surgery include:
- Minimal pain after surgery
- Less bleeding during the procedure
- Faster recovery time
- Lower risk of infection
- Short hospital stay
- Quick return to normal activities
Due to these benefits, laser piles surgery is increasingly recommended by doctors across India.
Dr Amita Jain says, “Laser piles surgery offers a modern solution for hemorrhoid treatment, helping patients recover faster with less pain and return to their normal lives sooner.”
Expected Post-Surgery Recovery Time
Recovery after laser piles surgery is generally faster than traditional haemorrhoid surgery. However, the exact timeline can vary depending on the patient’s health, the severity of the piles, and how well post-operative care instructions are followed.
First 24 Hours
Most patients are discharged from the hospital within a few hours after the surgery. Mild discomfort, swelling, or a slight burning sensation may be experienced in the treated area. Doctors usually prescribe pain relief medication to manage this discomfort. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities on the first day.
First 3–4 Days
During the next few days, patients gradually start feeling better. Mild pain or discomfort may still be present, but usually decreases quickly. Walking and light daily activities can be resumed during this period. However, prolonged sitting and heavy physical work should still be avoided.
Return to Work after Laser Piles Surgery
In many cases, patients in India can return to work within 5 to 7 days, especially if their job involves desk work or light physical activity. Those who have physically demanding jobs may require slightly more time to recover.
Complete Healing
Although most daily activities can be resumed within a week, complete healing of the treated tissues usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks. During this time, maintaining proper bowel habits and a healthy diet is essential to avoid strain.
Factors Affecting Recovery in Indian Conditions
Recovery time can also depend on lifestyle and environmental factors commonly seen in India. Diet plays a major role—low fibre intake and spicy foods may worsen constipation and slow healing. Long working hours that involve prolonged sitting can also affect recovery if proper breaks are not taken.
Following the doctor’s instructions carefully, taking prescribed medications, and maintaining good hygiene can help ensure a smoother recovery.
Tips for Faster Recovery
Patients can improve recovery after laser piles surgery by following a few simple measures:
- Eat a high-fibre diet including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
- Drink plenty of water to prevent constipation
- Avoid straining during bowel movements
- Take sitz baths if recommended by the doctor
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a few weeks
Difference between conventional and laser piles surgery
| Aspect | Conventional Piles Surgery | Laser Piles Surgery |
| Procedure Type | May require 1–2 days of hospitalisation | Minimally invasive procedure using laser energy to shrink piles |
| Pain After Surgery | Usually more painful due to incisions and stitches | Less painful because there are minimal cuts |
| Bleeding | Higher chances of bleeding during and after surgery | Minimal bleeding as laser seals blood vessels |
| Hospital Stay | Usually, a day-care procedure with same-day discharge | Minimal bleeding as the laser seals blood vessels |
| Recovery Time | Around 2–4 weeks for full recovery | Faster recovery, usually about 1–2 weeks |
| Return to Work | Typically 10–14 days or more | Many patients return to work within 5–7 days |
| Risk of Infection | Slightly higher due to open wounds | Lower risk because of minimal tissue damage |
